Other Connection Airports

1. Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)

Located just 12 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, Midway Airport is a popular choice for travelers looking for a smaller, faster-moving airport experience. It’s the main hub for Southwest Airlines and also serves Avelo, Allegiant, and Porter Airlines.  With shorter security lines and quicker check-in, MDW is a great choice for domestic travel or those wanting a simpler airport experience.

2. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE)

Though it’s located about 85 miles north of Chicago, Milwaukee’s MKE Airport is a solid alternative for travelers in the region. You can get there easily from O’Hare using Amtrak or Coach USA shuttles.  It’s served by airlines like American Airlines and United Airlines  and is especially convenient for folks heading to or from Wisconsin or the northern suburbs of Chicago.

3. Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD)

Situated about 72.5 miles northwest of the city, RFD offers flights through Allegiant Airlines and also hosts charters to international vacation spots like Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.   If you want to skip the big crowds and prefer a smaller airport, this could be a great fit.  You can get there by car via I-90 and US-20, or take a Coach USA Van Galder bus straight from O’Hare.

Flights, Arrivals, and Transfers

O’Hare is a super busy airport with flights going all over the world.  It has four main parts, called terminals: Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are for flights inside the U.S., and Terminal 5 is for flights coming from or going to other countries.   If you’re flying in from another country, you’ll land at Terminal 5.  There, you’ll have to go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This is where they check your passport and make sure you’re allowed to enter the U.S. Sometimes it’s quick, like 15 to 30 minutes, but it can take longer, especially when it’s busy.  You might have to wait for two hours or more!  If you need to catch another flight inside the U.S. after landing from another country, you’ll have to get your bags, go through customs, and then check your bags again. And remember, to go from Terminal 5 to the other terminals, you’ll have to leave the secure area and go through security again. If you’re just changing planes inside the U.S., it’s easier. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected, so you can walk between them without going through security again. This makes it faster to get to your next flight. If you need to go to other places in the airport, like where you rent cars or where you park, you can use the free Airport Transit System (ATS). It runs all the time and makes it easy to get around.

Security and Customs at O’Hare

Going through security at O’Hare is usually pretty quick.  Most of the time, you’ll wait about 15 minutes. But when it’s busy, it can take up to 40 minutes. There are 10 security checkpoints spread out across the terminals, and they all have special lanes for people with TSA PreCheck, which makes it even faster. Terminal 5, where international flights arrive and leave, usually has the longest lines. This is because they have to check everyone’s passports and documents. If you’re flying to another country, make sure you get to the airport early. They say you should get there at least 90 minutes before a flight inside the U.S., and 2 to 3 hours before a flight to another country.

Terminal Details

Terminal 1: United Airlines’ Place

There are also many shops where you can buy things.  This terminal handles both flights inside the U.S. and some flights to other countries, so it’s usually one of the busiest places in the airport.

Terminal 2: Small and Easy

Terminal 2 has 41 gates spread across two areas called Concourses E and F. It’s used by a mix of airlines, including Alaska Airlines, Air Canada, United Express, and Southern Airways. Even though it’s smaller than the other terminals, Terminal 2 has a lot of restaurants, bars, and cafes where you can eat and drink. It also has some useful things like Mamava nursing pods for mothers and the only full-service barbershop in O’Hare. What’s really exciting is that Terminal 2 is going to change a lot soon. It’s going to be replaced by the brand-new Global Terminal, which is part of the O’Hare 21 expansion. Terminal 3: American Airlines’ Big Terminal

Terminal 3 is the biggest terminal at O’Hare, with 79 gates spread across four areas called Concourses G, H, K, and L. It’s the main place for American Airlines and also has flights from JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and other smaller airlines. Each concourse has a different mix of airlines:

1. Concourse G: American Eagle, Cape Air, Contour Airlines, Denver Air Connection

Getting to and From and Between Terminals at ORD

O’Hare Airport (ORD) is about 15 miles away from downtown Chicago, northwest of it. There are lots of ways to go to and from the airport, and also move between its four main terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3 (for domestic flights), and Terminal 5 (for international flights). Whether you’re going to the city, changing planes, or going to another airport, here’s how to do it.

Going from ORD to Downtown Chicago

1. By Train (CTA Blue Line):

• You can take the Blue Line train to go to downtown Chicago. It runs all the time, day and night.
• The train station is in the basement of Terminal 2. There are signs that say “Trains to the City” that will show you where to go.
• It takes about 40 to 55 minutes to get downtown.
• It costs $5 from the airport, and $2.50 for other rides in the city.
• This is the cheapest and most reliable way to get downtown, especially when the roads are busy.

2. By Taxi:

• You can find taxis outside where you get your bags at all the terminals.
• It costs about $35 to $60 to go downtown, depending on how busy the roads are and what time it is.
• It can take from 25 minutes to over an hour.

Tip- Only take taxis from the official taxi stands, and don’t go with people who ask you inside the terminal.

3. By Rideshare (Uber/Lyft):

• Rideshare pickups are at Terminal 2 between Doors 2A and 2D, and at Terminal 5 at Door 5B on the lower level.
• The price changes depending on the time, how far you’re going, and how many people are asking for rides. The app will tell you the price.

4. By Shuttle:

• GO Airport Express has shuttles that go to different hotels and neighborhoods downtown.

Tip- This is a good choice if you have lots of bags or want to go straight to your door.

Going from ORD to Midway International Airport (MDW)

1. By CTA Train:

• Take the Blue Line from O’Hare to Clark/Lake Station, then change to the Orange Line toward Midway.
• It takes about 90 minutes.
• It costs about $7 for both train rides.

Tip- Give yourself extra time, especially if you have luggage.

2. By Shuttle:

• Coach USA Wisconsin has shuttles that go straight between O’Hare and Midway.
• They run every hour.
• It costs about $16 one way.

3. By Taxi or Rideshare:

Getting Between Terminals at ORD

Walking Between Terminals:

It runs from 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM and takes about 10 minutes to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5.

2. Shuttle Bus (24/7):

A shuttle bus runs all the time, every 5 to 15 minutes, if the ATS is not running, ensuring 24/7 connections.

3. Airside Shuttle Buses:

United Airlines Airside Shuttle: Connects Gate E2A in Terminal 2 to Gate C9 in Terminal 1, for United Express to Star Alliance transfers.

Shuttle from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5: Picks up at Gates G17, K20, and L24 in Terminal 3, skipping the Terminal 5 security checkpoint.

You can’t take this shuttle from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3, due to customs rules.

4. Connecting Flights at ORD:

1. Domestic to Domestic: Walk between Terminals 1, 2, and 3, which are airside connected.

2. Domestic to International: Take the ATS or shuttle to Terminal 5. You have to go through security again.

3. International Arrivals and Transfers: You arrive at Terminal 5, go through customs, get your bags, and check them again. Then, take the ATS or shuttle to the other terminals. You have to go through security again.

• All the rental car places are in one building called the Multi-Modal Facility (MMF). You can get there by taking the Airport Transit System (ATS).
